The first five elements of the the reactivity series ( K,Na,Ca,Mg and Al) have very high affinity for oxygen therefore their oxides cannot be reduced by a reducing agent (C,CO and H). Theie oxides can only be reduced by electrolytic reduction.

The oxides of elements lower in the reactivity series (Zn,Fe,Pb and Cu) can be reduced by heating with reducing agents (C, CO and H).

The oxides of more lower elements like Hg and Ag can be reduced only by heating.
