why cannot animal make food from carbon dioxide water and sunlight like plants do

Plants are autotrophic, in simple words they make their own food whilst animals are heterotrophic as in we eat other plants or animals.
By the way the plants have evolved in such a way while we have in another way.

Plants prepare their own food through the process of photosynthesis. Chlorophyll the green pigment which is present in the leaves of the plants plays a vital role in this process of preparing food. As animals don't have the pigment chlorophyll, they cannot prepare their own food even if all the other essential components are available.
