Answer:

Carbon cannot be used in the reduction of Al2O3 in metallurgy. ... Aluminium Oxide is a very stable oxide and lies below the the oxidation line of carbon in Ellingham Diagram hence Al2O3 cannot be reduced by carbon as it is energetically not favourable.

Carbon or Carbon monoxide cannot reduce Al2O3.

Let me tell you why .....
I don’t know in which class you are ....but try to understand this concept.

Ellingham Diagram :
An Ellingham diagram is a graph showing the temperature dependence of the stability for compounds. This analysis is usually used to evaluate the ease of reduction of metal oxides and sulfides. These diagrams were first constructed by Harold Ellingham in 1944

Refer the picture as I say . You see Gibbs free energy plays a important role of what should reduce what . From the picture , take a reaction line ..... that compound can reduce any metal above it .

For example :
Titanium cannot reduce Magnesium but can reduce zinc .

So see the carbon, carbon monoxide and aluminum . Aluminum is below carbon and carbon monoxide line. This
Aluminum can reduce them and not vice versa .

Hope this answer is clear .

By the way , I will tell you what is Gibbs free energy .

In thermodynamics, the Gibbs free energy is a thermodynamic potential that can be used to calculate the maximum of reversible work that may be performed by a thermodynamic system at a constant temperature and pressure.
