What we call one unit of charge is the amount of charge on one electron, e-. Protons have the same amount of charge, but opposite in sign, e+. We now know that protons and neutrons are built from quarks, and that quarks have fractional charges, both positive and negative. Quarks always combine in such a way that the total charge is either e+ or zero.
