sodium ion is already stable so it won't react while sodium atom is unstable and reactive and tends to lose one of its electrons.sodium of table doesn't react with water like sodium metal because its separate from cholorine as ionic sodium and ionic sodium is stable and it is solvated hence it doesn't react.
