The farther away the source of a sound is from a listener, the more echoes there are, and the more degraded the depth of amplitude modulation gets. As you would expect, the neurons fired less and less when the sound moved further away and the depth of amplitude modulation degraded more and more.

Beacuse the more the distance from the source of sound the less is the intensity of the sound.
It travels in the form of a wave and due to repeated interactions with air molecules for a longer distance the energy gets dissipated and thus we hear a feeble sound.
