It happens because when we stay in lighted area (mainly in sunlight) the pupil becomes small to avoid excessive light entering into the eyes. When we come in a darkened cinema hall, the pupil becomes small in size .
When we stay in sunlight the cones are active, but when we come to a darker place rods take some time to become active.
