Hey dear,
● Why can't you smell unlit incense stick -
- In an unlit incense stick, perfume particles are in solid state.
- These solid particles have very low kinetic energy, thus travel shorter distance only.
- Therefore we can't smell unlit incense stick.
- When the incense stick is lit, the perfume partciles gets converted to gaseous form thus acquire larger kinetic energy.
- These partciles travel faster and thus we can smell it at a distance.
Hope this helps...

"For the simple reason that essential oils and resins, oleo gum resins etc used to flavor the incense are trapped in a natural resinous coating, perhaps akin to varnish.
Once lit, the incense releases the scent as the resinous coating is burned away.
Most fragrant woods, like sandal, aloes wood and others have little scent without being subjected to heat."
