Water has comparatively very little amount of oxygen (in dissolved form) than that of atmospheric air. But the oxygen will get dissolved repeatedly when the container is kept open so that the o2 level will be constant. So, if the container is closed, the oxygen remaining in the container will be used up by the fish and there will not be any oxygen in the container at some level. So, the fish ultimately die.
