Why cant our immune system protect us from viruses? (please answer in detail)

some viral diseases can be killed like smallpox n measles.
Viruses are very small in size n when viruses enter our body they attack the cell first, if the immune system recognises the virus then it can be killed but if the virus succeed it can create multiple copies of it.
As we all know that virus becomes active inside our body n able to reproduce. so when immune system fails to recognise it, it enters our cell n start damaging part of our body.
And till we recognise the virus it will be too late.
