the relative atomic masses  of all elements hve been found with respect to an atom of carbon -12.unlike oxygen it doesn,t react with all elements 2 form compounds . .and unlike hydrogen ,the masses of other elements didn't come out to be fractional...........so...........it is taken as rmu

zyan: its amu not rmu..

  1. Unlike oxygen and hydrogen, which exhibit various isotopes in higher proportions, carbon-12 is the single most abundant (98% of available carbon) isotope of carbon.
  2. It is also very stable.
  3. Hence, it makes more accurate unit of measuring mass and is used to define atomic mass unit.

Hope it helps you!
