pCarbon has four electrons in its valence shell; it needs four more electrons to complete its octet, which it does by sharing electrons.

Since, metals are donors with 1, 2 or 3 valence electrons, so they cannot react with carbon.carbon form covalent compound while metal form ionic compounds. metal have tendency to lose the electronHydrogen is included in activity series since it donate electron like metal and form positive ion although it is not a metal.
