Explanation:

Carbon has atomic number 6 . It has an electronic configuration of 2,4. It has for valence electrons . It cannot lose all it's four valence electrons to form a C+4 cation because it is impossible for 6 protons to hold 2 electrons . Similarly carbon cannot gain four electrons to  form a C-4 anion because it is impossible for 6 protons to hold on 10 electrons as it requires a very high amount of energy. So, in order to attain stability carbon prefers to share its valence electrons with other carbon atoms or atoms of other elements through covalent bonding.
