Because it is tetravalent and has 4 electrons in its outermost shell so if it gains or lose to complete its octect so it requires lot if energy for this. So it shares electron with any other element.

carbon do not gain and lose actually it is sharing with another element.when he needs his electron back
he will snatch from that element.
