There are so many reasons as to why carbon forms covalent compounds. Some major reasons are

1) Its valence shell electronic configuration.

It has 4 electrons in its valence shell, so if carbon take 4 more electrons from outside it becomes difficult for the nuclear charge to handle 10 electron. And if it gives 4 electron it will be needing a lot of energy so, its stability may be compromised.

2)Its size,since its atomic size is as such that if it gives or takes its stability is adversely affected.
