A carbon atom has been no tendency to lose its four valence electrons or gain four more electrons from other atoms. Therefore, carbon atom completes its octet only by sharing its valence electrons with other atoms. As a result, therefore carbon alwaysforms only covalent bonds with other atoms.

carbon forms covalent compounds because carbon has 4 electrons in its valency cell and it would be difficult to hold even more electrons to it , further it cannot completely transfer the 4 electrons as it needs more energy to be separated . hence it forms covalent compounds by the sharing of electrons
