there r 2 reasons
1. carbon can not lose its 4 electrons to make it outermost shell complete. bcoz it takes too much energy, which is impossible.
2. carbon can not take 4 electrons to complete it's outmost shell. bcoz the size of carbon is very small.
so. it shares the electrons , and make covalent bond.
