In order to complete its octet i.e., to attain its noble gas configuration and to stabilize itself, carbon can:

Either lose four electrons to formC4+or gain four electrons to formC4-. This, however, requires a lot of energy and would make the system unstable. Therefore, carbon completes its octet by sharing its four electrons with the other carbon atoms or with atoms of other elements....

CARBON DOESN'T FORMS C4+ or C4- ions BECAUSE WHETHER IF IT LOSES OR GAINS 4 ELECTRON AND FOR THIS PROCEESS THERE WILL BE A REQUIREMENT OF A HUGE AMOUNT OF RNERGY MORE THAN THAT OF FUSION WHICH IS NOT POSSIBLE IN SO IT FORMS BOND BY SHARING OF ELECTRON WITH MONOVALENT ATOMS...

carbon form covalent bond because in its outermost shell 4 electrons present and it can link with other atoms in four different direction .
It does not exist in the form of c4- and c4+ because in its outermost shell 4 electrons are present because of that we cannot add or loose electron in it .
