Carbon shows self linking Property called catenation. This is because c-c single bond is very strong.Carbon is very special because it canform so many compounds. The explanation lies deep inside the atom. ... Carbon can also link together in long chains or rings, carbon to carbon tocarbon to carbon and so on. Chemists call these links chemical bonds; very long chains, made by joining shortones, are called polymers.

The shortest answer:
Carbon forms many many compounds because:-
- It has the tendency of catenation (to form long chains of identical atoms)
- It forms 4 covalent bonds.
- It shows isomerism(molecules with same chemical formula but different structural)
Hope it helps you.
Have a nice day:-)
