Carbon is called as versatile element due to it's SELF-LINKING property. It means carbon can form single,double and triple bonds with other carbon atoms. It is the unique property of carbon. By this they form long branched chains and rings with other carbon atoms. They can also form rings and chains with other atoms as chlorine, hydrogen, etc.

Chain may be straight, branched & closed.

Ex: Silicon, Sulphur, oxygen & Phosphorus

❷❭ Tetravalency

The ability to link other atoms by four covalent bonds.

Ex: Hydrogen & Chlorine

❸❭ Multiple Bonding

The ability to form double of triple bonds with itself or with other atoms.

Ex: Oxygen, Nitrogen & Sulphur
