is a single carbon atom stable? It is well known that single atom of oxygen is notstable, and it forms O2 molecule. But elements like carbon form a network of repeated bonds. As answered in another question, last atoms in such network are unstable and need to create some bonds.

Dear friend, good question you have asked.
lt is a major source of pollution. It is formed by incomplete combustion of fuels. It is very harmful for us. A high concentration of carbon monoxide in air affects the growth of plants causing leaf drop. It is found in nature in the form of chlorofluorocarbons which is mostly used as refrigerants, as propellants, solvent and foaming agents. When released in the atmosphere, they decompose under the ultraviolet radiations. lt cause the depletion of ozone layer by decomposing ozone to oxygen.
I hope you understand if not then you can ask again I will make you understand better. Thanks for asking this question.
