Generally all standards are determined by the IUPAC system know. International union of pure and applied chemistry. IUPAC chose carbon 12 as the standard because it is a naturally occurring abundant solid and can easily form a lot of compounds with other elements. It is extremely stable too. Because of these unique properties, it is chosen as standard.

IUPAC USES CARBON-12 AS STANDARD NOW BECAUSE
1. CARBON-12 IS A SOLID AND CAN BE EASILY HANDELED
2. NATURALLY OCCURING CARBON-12 IS IN ABUNDANCE
3. CARBON-12 CAN FORM MANY COMPOUNDS WITH OTHER ELEMENTS ON EARTH AND CAN BE EASILY COMPARED
4. CARBON-12 IS A STABLE ELEMENT
