CO2 has ability to absorb and re - emit infrared energy is what makes CO2 an effective heat trapping green house gas .Not all molecules are able to absorb infrared.

water vapour is also a green house gas which trap heat in the atmosphere and causes temperature to rise ... so as warm temperature lead to more water vapour in the air , more water vapour lead to warmer temperature , which creates a positive feedback .

Gases that trap heat in the atmosphere are called greenhouse gases.  CO2 has a tendency to absorb heat radiations of sun which are reflected back from earth. and molecules of water vapours have the tendency to trap heat.
