Why caterpillar shed their skin when they enter the pupa stage?​

Caterpillars must "shed" (or molt) their skin in order to grow. Unlike us, insects have an exoskeleton, which means that they are pretty much "encased" inside their skin. The skin does not grow with the animal, so they have to shed their skin.
