cations are smaller than the parent atom because they have been formed by the removal of electrons so that the no. of protons is more in the cations than the parent atom thus the effective muclear pull on the shells of cations is greater thus pulling it to smaller size
anions are larger than the larent atom because When the electrons are added they outnumber the protons, the overall attractive force that the protons have for the electrons is decreased thus the nuclear pull is less so the anions becomes larger
