Festivals are celebration to remember the events occurred on that particular day.Different people of different religion, community have different festivals and their reasons to celebrate them.
Earlier festivals were celebrated as a reminder of a particular event.Like when people celebrates DIWALI-they celebrate the victory of GOOD over EVIL,Celebrating Christmas Is Celebration of the birth of Christ, and same goes for Eid, Thanks Giving,Holi etc.Even after many years, people are celebrating the joy of that event

The main reason we celebrate festivals is because the majority of them are more or less religiously centered and thus we come to honor our religions. ... We celebrate festival because: Its an occasion of social gathering.
