Cell is called an osmotic system because cell is separated from outside environment by semi-permeable membrane similar to osmotic system. This membrane regulates the movement of water molecules in and out of the cell according to the concentration gradient.

The cell is known as an osmotic system because it regulates the osmolarity inside and outside the cell.

Explanation:

  • The cell has a cell membrane which is the semi permeable membrane. It allows only certain types of sentences to enter the cell and prevent the entry of the rest of the substance.
  • The cell allows water to move on either side of it.
  • Water diffuses from  the region of lower osmolarity to the region of higher osmolarity.
  • Also there is no movement of the solutes. Hence there is good regulation of solvent quantity.
  • For these reason the cell membrane is known as the semi permeable membrane.
