Why cellular organisation and consciousness are considered as defining features of living organisms?

Non living objects don't show metabolism but metabolic reactions can be demonstrated in call -free system. Hence cellular organisation is the defining property of living organism. Technically complicated feature of all living organism is irritability i.e. their ability to sense their environment and respond to it. Both plants and animals respond to environmental factors like light, temperature, water etc. Consciousness therefore is the defining property of living.
