Answer:

The lancelets are also called cephalochordates, because the notochord extends from near the tip of the tail to well into the anterior of the body. Because they do not have the braincase, or cranium, of a vertebrate, lancelets are often called acraniates.

  • A member of the chordate subphylum known as the cephalochordata is known as a cephalochordate (from the Greek words kephalé, "head," and o khordé, "chord"). Lancelets are a common name for them. The five synapomorphies, or core traits, that all chordates have at some point during their larval or adult phases are present in cephalochordates. The notochord, dorsal hollow nerve cord, endostyle, pharyngeal slits, and post-anal tail are among these five synapomorphies (see chordate for descriptions of each). The Bahamas lancelet, Asymmetron lucayanum, is the best-known example of the delicate structure of the cephalochordate notochord. The Amphioxiformes, which are often found in warm temperate and tropical waters all over the world, represent cephalochordates in the contemporary oceans.
  • The segmented marine creatures known as cephalochordates have elongated bodies with a notochord that runs the entire length of the organism from head to tail. They are barely a few millimetres long, and as they lack a skeleton that has been calcified, there is little evidence of them in the fossil record. A few fossils have been discovered, including those of Pikaia in the Burgess Shale of British Columbia and the Yunnanozoon fossil, which is also from the Cambrian era.
