why cherapunji receives more rainfall than shillong?

it is because cherapunji lies near the water bodies and as water have a high specific heat capacity there is more evaporation in the region which consequently leads to more precipitation ( rainfall) while Shillong lies on the coast where there are less water bodies due to which tere is less evaporation and consequently the region experiences less rainfall.

Mawsynram and chirapunji is present in the windward side of khasi hills whereas shillong is present on leeward side of khasi hills. thus, shillong gets less rainfall than mawsynram even though they are present in same vicnity
