Cherrapunji lies on the Windward side of the Khasi hills. It receives rain from the South West Monsoon Bay of Bengal Branch as it is in the Pathway of these winds. Hence because of the high hills it receives heavy rainfall.

Cherrapunji lies on the Windward side of the Khasi hills. It receives rain from the South West Monsoon Bay of Bengal Branch as it is in the Pathway of these winds. Hence because of the high hills it receives heavy rainfall while the Rajasthan is nearer to the equator and to the Thar desert .
