Using ice-cold ethanol and ice-coldwater increases the yield of DNA. Low temperatures protect the DNA by slowing down the activity of enzymes that could break it apart. ... DNases in the cytoplasm would destroy the DNAof viruses entering the cell. Cold ethanol helps the DNA to precipitate more quickly.

DNA extraction is an important step in the genomics and genetics.

Explanation:

Quality and quantity of DNA is an important factor in genetic process and the quality or quantity depends on the chemicals used in isolation.

Ethanol is an essential chemical used for DNA extraction and DNA storage. For DNA extraction, DNA is precipitated after removing it from cell. As we know, DNA is a polar molecule having a negatively charged backbone of PO3- (phosphate group). So, Na+ ions (sodium) is used to neutralize the negatively charged DNA molecules that makes DNA more stable and less soluble in water.

Ethanol or alcohol is used in the precipitation process. Chilled ethanol is widely used to reduce the temperature of precipitation for good quality of DNA. Chilled ethanol is also used to reduce the temperatureto prevent the activity of enymes DNAse, responsible for DNA lysis or degradation. Reduction in the activity of DNAse enzyme results in high  yield of pure DNA.

after precipitaion separated aqueous phas is rinsed with ethanol to remove any cell debris and further stored in water.
