There is an aging population in China and so more babies are needed to fuel the future economy. The estimate for 2018 is around 7 million additions which is 0.5% which is a low percentage. 7 million is a lot of people but not that big on the overall scheme of things in China. If this was UK would be 10% of the population which is huge
Because after the civil war with KMT, CCP really did some work on increasing people’s living conditions. And Mao said, we need more babies (soldiers) to against super powers.
Then at 1970s, we found our population was increasing too fast, well, we need less babies now (to feed).
Then at 2010, we found we are facing ageing of population, sorry guys, please make more babies.
Because China is still a relatively young country and there’s a “bubble” of young adults currently having children. China is currently at the tail end of this phenomenon and the population is expected so start shrinking around 2020–2030, with major economic consequences:
I imagine you’re probably asking this because you know about the One-Child Policy that had been enforced for many years in China. The reason the population is still rising is because most of the people belonging to the generation of young people prior to the law are still alive today. Unfortunately, overpopulation is not a problem so easily solved overnight; the government realized too late that the population was growing too quickly, so when the law was enacted, the people in the very large families would still be alive for decades to come. Thus, even with most families only having one child, the death rates have still been lower than the birth rates. This will certainly not last much longer, though – already China’s population growth rate is starting to decline. It should also be noted that most ethnic minorities in China have either been exempt from the law, or the law is not really enforced, so they continue to have large families since most minorities live in rural, agricultural areas where children are needed to help work.
As it stands now, China is looking at a massive drop in population over the next few decades, which will present a host of social and economic problems. First of all, in Chinese society, parents are expected to pay for their children’s entire education up through college and help pay for their house, vehicle, etc., and in return, children are expected to support their parents in their old age, often taking them into their house – thus, nursing homes don’t really exist in China. But with only one child to take care of both parents (or one husband and wife potentially taking care of four), this puts an enormous strain on the children in terms of time and finances. This ties into the problem of jobs. With a large vacancy of jobs formerly occupied by the baby boomers, the next generation will have to work extra hard to support the economy, a tough mission with parents at home to take care of. Also, parents usually prefer male children over female children since the males will carry on the family name, which means that a disparity exists now between male and female population, which will further lower the birth rates.
Seeing potential problems in the future, the CCP has gradually relaxed their stance on the One-Child Policy, and now most couples are eligible to have two children. The party is especially worried that its prestige may drop as a result of the shrinking labor force, and the last thing the party wants is any kind of challenges to their legitimacy. What future policies the government enacts in the next decade or so as the population and labor force drops dramatically, we will have to wait and see.
