Chlorine reacts with sodium hydroxide to sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl). This is a very good disinfectant with a stable effect. Bleach cannot be combined with acids. When bleach comes in contact with acids the hypochlorite becomes unstable, causing poisonous chlorine gas to escape.
