Mass number is the total number of protons and neutrons in a nucleus.

Number of protons in Cl = 17
Number of neutrons in Cl = 17

So, 17+17 = 35

So the mass number of Cl should be 35 but it is 35.5

The answer to this is because Chlorine has 2 isotopes which are -Chlorine-35 and Chlorine-37.

Isotopes are the atoms of same elements that equal numbers of protons but different numbers of neutrons. The differ in atomic mass (mass number) but they have the same chemical properties.

Ritsz: What??
Ritsz: This is all i have learn so far..........m in 9th
Ritsz: And this question is also of 9th class
abhi178: dear no of neutrons =17 and no of protons =17 then mass no =17+17 according to you but you write 35
abhi178: here no of neutrons =18 not 17 okay
Ritsz: I wrote 17+17 = 35 which should be 34....and that's only wrong.i'll correct it as soon as the edit option comes again.....
abhi178: good
abhi178: but no of neutrons you write =18 not 17 okay then mass no =17+18 =35

Number of neutrons plus number of protons =35
But it has two isotopes Cl 37 and Cl 35 so it is written as 35.5
