why chlorine is written as cl2

Cl 2 indicates one molecule of chlorine.
Since, chlorine is a diatomic molecule, so it is written as cl2

diatomic molecules are those molecules which contain two atoms...

Cl - is a single atom of chlorine.
cl2 - is a molecule of chlorine
but an atom as no independent existence, so its molecular form is written in the reactions...

hope this helps....
