The circulation of blood in higher organisms is known as double circulation because generally, the higher organisms have four chambers in heart. So firstly, deoxygenated blood flows into the heart to get oxygenated and secondly, the oxygenated blood flows from the heart to different parts of the body.
It is advantageous because the four chambers help in keeping the oxygenated blood away from the deoxygenated blood and prevents their mixing.
