THE KINK PREVENTS THE MERCURY PRESENT IN THE CAPILLARY TO FALL BACK INTO THE BULB. SO IT SEPARATES THE HIGH TEMPERATURE MERCURY AND COOL MERCURY AND ALLOWS THE USER TO TAKE A READING WHEN THE THERMOMETER IS TAKEN OUT
