carbon monooxide molecule, carbon(C) has 4 valence e- and oxygen( O) has 6 e-.Thus total no. of valence electrons will be 10e-.If single bond is formed between C and O,to complete the octet of oxygen ,then remaining two electrons are the lone pair on C-atom.
C ----O(SINGLE BOND),this will not complete the octet on carbon. So in this way it does not obey the octet rule. But triple bond is formed between C and O.There will be shairing of total 6e- between carbon and oxygen, thereby satisfying octet of both the atoms.
