all organisms need energy. energy is gained by breaking down chemical compounds such as glucose. for breaking down glucose, we need oxygen which is gained by respiration(while inhaling). the oxygen breaks glucose into CO2 and water and some other organic compounds releasing energy which we use. the same happens in plants and animals . the co2 released out during the process is given out through respiration (while exhaling)
