Why coal does not burn by itself in air but once initiated by flame, it continues to burn?

we can simply observe that this is combustion reaction which uses oxygen to burn & form harmful carbon compound like CO, CO2.
coal initially doesn't have that much kinetic energy (between it's atom ) to burn with oxygen. but if we give a flame to it , it's kinetic energy increase & react with oxygen to form CO2(combustion). & the heat produce is transferred to other parts of coal & finally all coal burns.

Activation energy for the combustion reaction is very high and is not available at room temperature. On applying flame, a part of the coal and air in contact with the flame absorb heat which provides the necessary activation energy and combustion starts. The heat liberated further provides activation energy for the combustion to continue.
