Monocots have single cotyledons whereas dicots have two cotyledons in them.

Coleoptile and Coleorhiza are important in the monocots so as to protect the plumule and radical respectively.

Coleoptile encloses the shoot apex and the leaves within it and when they grow out of the seed through the soil, it protects them. It on emerging out of the soil develops green colour and performs photosynthesis.

Coleorhiza is the sheath which encloses the root cap and the radical within it and only protects them till they emerge out of the seed. It doesn't protect it through its emergence from the soil.
