Red cell compatibility. It is a general principle that red cell components of identical ABO group and RhD type as the recipient should be used for transfusion. As shown in the table below, 0 Rh negative is the universal red cell donor blood that can be given to all patients.

Blood products are used for a blood transfusion and not whole blood because:

◼ Each patient requires separate blood components based on the condition of trauma or disease.

◼ It will be better to provide that particular component than the whole blood which is not required by the patient.

◼ So usually in blood banks when blood is collected from the donor its components are separated immediately.
