Why compression ratio of petrol engine is smaller than diesel engine?

Compared to diesel, petrol is very volatile and can easily mix up with air and get burnt. Now considering a petrol engine with a greater compression ratio, in the compression stroke the fuel air mixture will be compressed to a smaller volume which increases temperature and will cause the knocking of the fuel.
