It's a joint. If the road was poured in one piece it would have cracks all over the place. Instead it is poured in smaller sections with small gaps in between that allow the concrete to expand and contract due to heat changes. The strip on top is a seal to stop water from getting into the crack and also to create a smooth finish.

Roads and Road Pitches
- The roads cannot be laid in a single stretch. It needs to be broken in parts and should be laid so that there would not be crack development. Hence roads are laid in patches which ensures the prevalence of durability.
- Here individual pitches can be examined completely and cracks if any can be sorted out. Road pitch is the initial stages of laying road. The pitches are then made to coagulate with Tar and is pressured using a levelling machine.
- Problems if any can be identified and a particular area can be repaired using this technique.
