The growth and the productivity from the primary sector is very low. Though India ranks second in the agricultural output after China, the production per hectare is very low. The important aspects of primary sector are : provides employment to around 50% of our population.

The growth in share of agriculture in GDP as per the final figures of 2008-09 was -0.1%.
