Bcz Copper comes in exposure to moist air and the water and air rust the copper and form a green color coating of rust on copper due to some chemical reactions of corrosion ....

just like iron when left open air corroded similarly copper when opened to atmosphere there is series of chemical reaction which turns it greenish which furture protects the inner layer of copper from corrosion.
