Why cotton plug is used in limit test for arsenic?

arsenic limit test is based on reaction between arsenic gade and hydrogen ion to form yellow strain in reaction with mercuric chloride paper . cotton wool dipped in the solution of lead acetate is used to trap any hydrogen sulphate gas released with arsenic gass
