Why cryolite is added during the extraction of aluminium?

☸In metallurgy of Aluminium, Al is extracted from Alumina (Al2O3) by the process of electrolytic reduction.

☸Cryolite(Na3AlF6) is added during the extraction of Aluminium because :-

➡it lowers down the melting point of Alumina(Al2O3) from 2323K to 1140K

➡it also increases the electrical conductivity of Al2O3
