Why culture medium is closed with cotton plug or aluminium foil sheet???

this is done to prevent it from mibrobes which can harm the desired cells .

Cotton plugs are good as they are usually sufficient to keep Bacterial medium from contamination by fungal spore and other ,on the other hand it important  for proper aeration.
